Facebook + CNN = total coverage of 2012 election – the dawn of a digital democracy?

facebook cnn election 2012 social voting stefano paganiniAs Mashable reports Facebook is teaming up with CNN to socialize coverage of the 2012 election, as the social network aims to become a “second screen” for political coverage.

The new experience, “America’s Choice 2012,” will encourage Facebook’s 160 million U.S. users to share their political views through an app, buzz measurements and surveys. The two companies will aggregate users’ sentiment and CNN will incorporate the findings into its coverage.

So, what will this mean?

Facebook and CNN will launch an interactive, engaging I’m Voting Facebook application.
The app will enable people who use Facebook to commit to voting and endorse specific candidates and issues. Commitments to vote will be displayed on people’s Facebook timeline, news feed, and real-time ticker.

The app, which will be available in English and Spanish, will enable people to share their commitment to vote and support of particular issues or candidates with friends and will provide a way to see how many of their own friends they’ve enlisted to support those issues or candidates. These commitments will be visually displayed by U.S. state on an interactive map.
The app will serve as a “second screen” for CNN’s America’s Choice 2012 political coverage. Via on-air, online and mobile segments, CNN personalities will use the app to ask Facebook users the most important questions driving the national dialogue and report on their answers.

This is not actually social voting, but a brand new way to track voters’ sentiment – in real time!

Maybe using an app to track buses by leveraging crowdsourced info and GPS technology.

Tiramisu was developed by researchers to improve users’ transit experiences and transit accessibility. Your data will help us improve Tiramisu and show the positive impact of technology on public transit.

The app that has helped residents navigate the region’s ever-changing bus schedules has gotten the financial boost needed to move across the country.

Tiramisu Transit LLC, the Carnegie Mellon University spinoff company that uses crowdsourcing and GPS technology to track Port Authority of Allegheny County and CMU transit trips, has received $102,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

By the way, Tiramisu is the italian word for pick me up (but it’s also the name of a gorgeous italian dessert!).

Tiramisu is available for free for iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android.

Twitter drops Linkedin partnership?

twitter linkedin partnership stefano paganiniThis is the kind of news that deserves much attention.

As reported by Mashable:

LinkedIn announced via a blog post on Friday that Twitter would no longer be partnering with the business-networking site to sync updates from one site to the other.
This ends a partnership that began in 2009. LinkedIn users can still create updates on the site and click a button to share to Twitter as well, but the the reverse is no longer possible.

Blame it on advertising revenues that didn’t match? Does a Twitter-filled Linkedin.profile look less professional?

Most comments in the Mashable post do agree with the parting and suggest that linking to Twitter led to much noise and lowered the professional touch required for a good-looking Linkedin profile.

Still a lot to understand about it.

Apple iTunes U + Piazza: Stanford classes go social

itunes u stanford ios appStanford is taking that a step further by linking the Piazza social learning platform with one of the most popular iTunes U courses: Professor Paul Hegarty’s iPad and iPhone App Development.

The new social media aspect of the course builds on a technology many students already use: Piazza, a social learning platform. Stanford students taking the classroom version of Paul Hegarty’s programming course, on which the online course is based, have used Piazza.

Earlier versions of the 10-week apps course have proved enormously popular, with individual lecture videos downloaded more than 10 million times.

The inclusion of Piazza will enhance the learning experience, said Brent Izutsu, Stanford’s program manager for iTunes U. “There is an enormous potential for collaboration and community-building though Q&A and problem-solving with friends from across the globe,” he said.

Those enrolled in the iTunes U class are expected to answer questions as well as ask them, while the course captains facilitate discussions and drive students toward correct answers.
