Community vs. content? Or just as important?

This post on Mashable well deserves your attention.

What are you doing to facilitate quality discussion on your blog or website?

The main assumption is:

News sites should think less about their comments and more about the discussion they’re facilitating.

Regarding building a community, author Todd Olmstead wrote:

I realized that the environment has to come before the content. The scope of my project was in fact too narrow: We were prioritizing the comments themselves, when we needed to be facilitating a better place for discussion.

No photos on Facebook Timeline please: we’re British!

facebook photos britishObviously, I mean that social networks redefine the old No sex please, we’re British situation.

The new Facebook Timeline is likely to break (heavily) into the life of many Britons, beginning the final deadline of December 22nd.

A recent study by British photo printing site MyMemory revealed shocking – but not entirely new – habits by UK Facebook users.

Researchers asked British people to reveal how many Facebook pictures showed themselves drinking alcohol or were taken after consuming alcohol.

The average British person is under the influence of alcohol in three-quarters (76%) of of his or her tagged Facebook photos, according to a new study.

Since Facebook is so social (isnt’it?) it’s quite obvious to think that most people in our friendship list will not be very happy to see you weren’t sober most of the time…

More than half (56%) admit they had drunk photos they wouldn’t want co-workers to see and 8% say their photos might cause serious trouble at work.
Ninety-three percent of respondents have untagged photos deemed too embarrassing.

Does the new Facebook Timeline – and its photos & privacy policies – concern you so much? Really?

Regarding privacy settings.

Only 12% of the 1,781 Facebook users who were polled don’t allow anyone to see their photos, while 58% let friends view their pics. A substantial 26% gave access to anyone.

Ok, this post is done, let’s go back to the Pub!

Facebook Timeline now public!

The new Facebook Timeline is now public and available to most users – after months of anticipatory buzz in social media circles.

Oh, users: that’s the hard part of the game…
It seems not everybody is happy with these Facebook changes and the new Timeline is no exception to the rule!

Most social media websites report some complaints from users getting disoriented by the new look & feel that, although a lot more logical – after all it’s a true timeline – gets upset loyal Facebook users that got so used to its facade in those years.

Lessons learned?
Forget mere usability, even to a behemoth like Facebook user acceptance is crucial!

Loyalty programs and travel: travel startup Topguest acquired by ezRez

topguestAs reported by TheClickBiz.com, ezRez Software, Inc has just acquired still-startupping firm Topguest.

Topguest works with loyalty and rewards programs such as Hilton HHonors, Priority Club, Wyndham Rewards, United MileagePlus and Caesars Total Rewards and with social networks including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare.
Through Topguest, consumers can get real-world value out of their online activities — in simple terms, you can earn loyalty points just for your checkins, photos and updates. You can then redeem those points for more travel.

Although not world-shaking, the acquisition of a just-out-of-beta startup clearly marks the urgence for bigger player to get a strong hold in the travel market: a crowded niche (and not actually a niche, since its boundaries are quite huge) where conventional online booking has been greatly enhanced by user-generated content, reviews plus geolocation systems.

IT jobs and hiring: surges up 10% in 2011 – better than expected?

IT jobs seekingWell, actually, according to Infoworld report and interviews, some bullish estimates set it closer to a +20% in 2011.

But, as they say, all that glitters ain’t gold!

But don’t make the mistake of thinking that jobs are going begging. They are not. Landing a position as a programmer, developer, database analyst, or support desk jockey still takes the right experience, the right education, and a willingness to chart a new career path when necessary.

The post goes on quoting the story of a french-born software engineer that repositioned himself with some smart tricks – and a resumè twist!
But how fast and how much is the market growing?

One way to gauge the growth is to look at job listings on Dice, one of the oldest and likely the largest techie job board in the country. At the beginning of 2010, there were 48,571 listing for tech jobs, including contract and part-time positions. That total has climbed steadily every month. At the beginning of October 2011, Dice listed 83,567 openings, an increase of 72 percent over January 2010, and 18 percent higher than October 2010.

The tech jobs boom favors developers, cloud experts, and business strategists so not everyone will get economic relief from this jobs market strong surge.

According to Jobely.com, a job search engine, in the last 3 months almost one out of five job search query were related to the developer keyword; in the same timeframe, one out of three job postings and offering were related to developer seeking.

Again, age discrimination in tech is one of those issues that’s always out there, but is rarely dealt with openly. Naturally, no company will admit to discriminating against older workers — it’s against the law. And when you don’t get hired, it’s a rare company that tells you why.

In the category of computer and mathematical occupations, the overall unemployment rate for people 55 and over jumped from 6 percent to 8.4 percent from 2009 to 2010, according to the data. For those 25- to 54-year-olds in that job category, the unemployment rate fell from 5.1 percent in 2009 to 4.5 percent in the same period

So, the key to get a brand new job is – partly – hidden in the way you market yourself in real world.
How do you demonstrate all of these wonderful attributes? In part, use social media. Kaazing looks for people who show leadership on discussion boards and networking sites like LinkedIn, says Yuan Weigel, Kaazing’s marketing vice president.

By the way, back in June 2011, Infoworld itself listed the 6 hottest new IT jobs around and, it seems, they’re still on the edge of the IT jobs searching market!

Here is Hot IT job top 6 list!

  • Hot IT job No. 1: Business architect
  • Hot IT job No. 2: Data scientist
  • Hot IT job No. 3: Social media architect
  • Hot IT job No. 4: Mobile technology expert
  • Hot IT job No. 5: Enterprise mobile developer
  • Hot IT job No. 6: Cloud architect

Foursquare best check-in? It’s now topping 15 milion users

foursquare

Foursquare now has 15 million users, tripling its base since this time last year. Half of the users are in the U.S., while the other 50 percent are international.

How does it stack up compared to the 700+ million Facebook users base?
Well, FourSquare is a mobile-social-geolocation-app, it strongly relates people with venues, location – AKA the real world.

I’d love to see more and more venues around, a lot more reviews about locations, pictures and more…

It’s the mobile app we all should have right now on our smartphone and, provided you know that you’re giving away some privacy details that may say a lot (more) about your life.

It’s quite difficult to fool a GPS (even though you can try!).
To me, it’s the most sincere social media (looks like you can’t lie where you are…) and one of the most original… it’s putting together real world and social people.

Are Bloggers Journalists? Are blogs to be considered as news services?

blogging as journalism

I blog, therefore I’m a journalist

You should not take for granted this statement: the debate whether blogging should be seen as a different kind of journalism is quite hot (and has been for a long time).
Fact is, there’s still no ruling about this and the mere fact of writing on a blog doesn’t make you a journalist – though.
On the other side, defamation and content responsibility limits are still to be defined worldwide.

This post by WebProNews begins from a court ruling (in favor) of a Oregon blogger suited by Obsidian Finance Group for defamation.

Internet blogs are not covered by the statute in question, which defines media of communication as “any newspaper, magazine or other periodical, book, pamphlet, news service, wire service, news or feature syndicate, broadcast station or network, or cable television system.

Chris Crum, WebProNews columnist, focuses on this point, actually:

And there it is. Where exactly is the line that turns a blog into a “news service”? When it has no opinion? Show me a news service that doesn’t have any opinion whatsoever. Even if you can show me one, there are plenty that do and are still likely considered news services in this case.

Is it about the format of the site? The ratio of unique news to commentary?

Content on the web is becoming more and more about who it’s coming from. Not the organization that publishes it. That’s why Google is using authorship markup, tied to people’s Google profiles. That’s why Facebook launched the subscribe button.

This is the key point: does a blog actually means news and a blogger mean journalist?
(actually I’ve got no real answer)

Imagination vs. knowledge: a sound advice

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.
For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”
