Did I mention I love MakeZine?
Every now and then, they come up with some cool design involving MAME arcade emulator, some sort of retrogaming machine and, of course, a lot of DIY assembly.
Photography guru Ken Rockwell spotted the PDF manual for the NASA version of Hasselblad dream camera.
Free at that link! With all the Soviet-era spacecraft and accessories becoming available on eBay — cheap — you budding space explorers may find this very helpful.
He may be right (he is, most of the time!), anyway this manual is somehow amazing and funny too!
Camera instructions usually include sample pictures of people on the seaside, smiling kids, beautiful girl… this Hasselblad manual features sample pictures of the Space Shuttle dock bay, tail and earth as seen from low orbit!
Obviously!
Social networking giant LinkedIn has hit the 100 million users milestone this week, reports itproportal.com.
The company also revealed that it was adding 1 million new members ever week – the equivalent of one new member every second.
Jeff Weiner, CEO of LinkedIn, said in a statement: “This isn’t just a big milestone for us – it’s also an important one for all of you, our members, who’ve helped build the LinkedIn network. We’re most inspired that by connected talent with opportunity at massive scale, we’re changing people’s lives in meaningful and sustainable ways.”
Increasingly, search marketing experts are embracing LinkedIn as it can help raise companies profiles, generating better brand awareness.
In a blog post addressed to its members, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner said that the growth is increasingly coming from countries other than the United States.
“Our site is currently used in over 200 countries and territories around the world, with more than half of our users coming from outside of the US,” Weiner said in his blog post.
The iPhone Guru posted this how-to on making your own infrared transmitter so that you can use your iOS device (such as iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad) as a remote control for your DSLR. This hack is a quick one and you may even have the required components already. On the software side, you’ll need to load up DSLR.Bot from the App Store to send the right codes to your camera.
Amazing as it may seem, the most expensive part of this tool is the iOS app: $ 4.99 and it uses the audio output, the 3,5 mm headphone jack, to send some sort of PWM to the DSLR IR receiver: great!!!
Believe it or not, even the MacBook Pro is not perfect.
In its latest 4 incarnations it gained a Firewire 800 port, losing the (aged, but still usable) Firewire 400 port.
Anyway, I’ve got a FW 400 cam and a LaCie FW 800 hard disk: how to connect both in a FW chain?
Meet Sonnet’s Yin Yang it’s simple Firewire hub, pocket-sized although a bit pricey (US $ 69.95) but it gets the job done in a really cool way!
I love these solutions.
More info on Sonnet’s web site.
B plan? Use a LaCie 3-port hard disk (with dual FW 800 that serves as a hub) + FW 400 + USB 2.0.
The iPad is cool because of applications such as Lutron‘s new RadioRA 2 control system.
With the app, now available on iTunes for $19.99, owners of the RadioRA 2 can control their system from afar (say, on vacation) and put their home into “green” mode by turning off unneeded appliances.
The Lutron Home Control+ application allows you to control your RadioRA 2 or Homeworks QS lighting control system over a Wi-Fi network with the convenience of the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.
Features?
iPad only:
Quickly access multiple system features in one place with the HomeGlance screen. Available features include: a favorite keypad, a list of favorite lighting and shade zones, timeclock mode (requires RadioRA 2 version 4.0 or higher), and temperature overview (coming soon)
Easily edit the light and shade levels programmed to keypad buttons and timeclock events in real time using the Level Editor (RadioRA 2 only, HWQS support coming soon)
Save energy without comprimising performance using “Green” buttons (RadioRA 2 only)
View and edit timeclock events on the Schedules screen (requires RadioRA 2 version 4.0 and higher)
iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch:
View and adjust light and shade levels throughout your home
Control system keypads including button feedback and raise/lower controls
Manage multiple RadioRA 2 and Homeworks QS systems in the same app.
The RadioRA control application (and others like it) is certainly the future in home automation.
Earthquakes are part of everyday life in Japan, but nothing seems to compare to what happened two days ago (and is still going on).
Earthquake, tsunamis and now, nuclear plant crisis and meltdown threat.
From the words of Japan’s PM: “Japan is now facing [maybe] the worst event since WWII”.
My heart & mind go to all people killed, injured and affected and their families.
We all should try to think and understand what’s wrong with our lives, the way we use this planet’s resource, the way we invest so little money in R&D about the environment and taking care of people.
“The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history.”
Friedrich Hegel (German Philosopher. 1770-1831)
Photo amateurs and pro-am astronomers around the world managed to spot Discovery’s flybys (check here for more info) and shot great pictures.
Several pictures included a trace that most observers were unable to understand… until a NASA spokeswoman later cleared the mystery by identifying the light as 150 pounds of astronaut urine and wastewater.
Besides the human factor even in outer space, it’s thrilling to see how many geeks out there are so keen on catching everything in the sky!
As reported by our friends at theiFile.com, the new release of iOS is now available through iTunes to all iPad, iPhone 4 and 3GS, iPod touch 3g and 4g owners.
A brief feature list include:
improved Safari Javascript engine and overall speed
Airplay: now greatly enhanced and available to most multimedia devices in your home!
iTunes sharing (at last!)
Personal hotspot (iPhone 4 only): the perfect solution to turn your iPhone 4 into a wireless gateway for all devices (and get over tethering).
I’ll be checking out all new 4.3 features really soon, so stay tuned!
While the world celebrates International Women’s Day on Mar 8, the search engine giant Google also continued its ‘doodle tradition’ by featuring a special doodle in its search engine home page in selected countries.
On Tuesday, Mar 8, Google boasted a Women’s Day doodle, which heralds the importance of access for women to education, training and science and technology.
The doodle portrayed a lady doctor and woman with graduation cap.
The aptly painted Women’s Day doodle announces the need women empowerment.
Several events occure on March 8th worldwide and Google has gathered them in a dedicated IWD 2011 page that, inviting people to “join on Bridges all over the world” (check the linked map) is a great starting point for everyone!
I appreciated the “Support a cause that you care about” section, where you can find (and donate) causes all over the world that need our money, our attention, our respect and that take care of one of the (too) many issues still threatening women’s lives: empowerment (loans anyone?), economy, education, health and so on!
It’a good reading to learn a lot more, just as I did, about the good side of this world and some people really trying to make it a better place (not just for women, by the way).
On the other side, Equals coalition -a group of 30 leading charities and arts organisations sponsored, among others, by Annie Lennox, has released a short video where the latest 007, Daniel Craig, wears a blonde wig, high heels and some make-up while Judi Dench, 007’s ‘M’ boss, voice asks him about equality.
Behind the humour is the real message, the James Bond actor is putting himself in a woman’s shoes, quite literally, to highlight the inequality women around the world face.
Love&respect to all women, everywhere, for the remaining 364 days in a year.
