Xmas 2012 version of a Reindeer Race? Social with Facebook, ‘real’ with Arduino!
Australian-based agency VML created this XMas-themed race with some technical and social cool elements!
Reindeer Race allows you to race your… reindeer (four available) and race against other people or some bots (according to who’s online).
The cool fact is that it work through Facebook, as an App, and uses your profile data (photo, for example) to socialize this race.
Even better, the race is for real!
Thanks to an interface to an Arduino-based board, the reindeers are really running and our frantic keystrokes will drive our… racer to victory.

Google in the 60’s: here’s how it would look to Mad Men if they were googlin’ around
Austrian company Masswerk built a very compelling Google front-end: Google60.
It looks like an fictional System 362 (not a real IBM System 360 – a historical mainframe) with a not-so fictional user interface that’s straight from the 60s.
That’s exactly what characters from Mad Men would see if they were using Google… in the 60s.
Technically speaking, it’s a Flash interface to Google that resembles punched cards, right from the past.
You can use a 60s keyboard and a special control panel to enter your search keyword then… patiently waiting for a dot-matrix printer to print out your results.
Speed wasn’t an issue in the 60s.
Go and try for yourself Google60, nice jobs Masswerk!

The future of shopping and online retailers – according to Newsweek
Newsweek’s current issue features a nice story by Megan McCardle about shopping, selling and the future of retailers – online too.
The article deals with Amazon, Best Buy and a lot more.
Sales were $12.1 billion in the third quarter of 2011; a year later, that number had shrunk to $10.7 billion, with net income working out to just 3 cents a share. Five years ago, in December 2007, a share of Best Buy was worth more than $50; today the company is trading just under $13. This may be some sort of record—from profit powerhouse to basket case in under five years.
What about this kind of competition?
Best Buy used to be the king of the “category killers”—the big-box stores like Blockbuster, Borders, and Toys “R” Us that dominated their market segments, driving out thousands of smaller retailers who simply couldn’t compete with each chain’s reach and buying power. But as that list suggests, it’s no longer a very safe kingdom to rule. The category killers are getting slaughtered by the competitive forces they themselves unleashed; the wave of relentless bargain hunters who once flooded their stores has now flowed onto the Internet, and especially to Amazon, where nearly anything can be purchased at bargain prices and delivered to your home in days. You might call them the “new window shoppers”: whenever they want something, from a flat-screen television to a 36-pack of toilet paper, they just open a new window in their Web browser. Their disappearance from stores has left mass retailers like Best Buy with a lot of expensive real estate that sales can no longer support.
Oh, these bits about Apple are very interesting:
If Best Buy is going to thrive, it will probably start with moves like this, following the examples of the Internet era’s great retail success stories. Apple stores have an average revenue per square foot of $6,000—higher than Tiffany’s. High-end kitchen retailer Sur la Table has been opening stores straight through the recession. Clothing retailers like Brooks Brothers and Jos. A. Banks saw double-digit sales growth last year.
Sales per square foot
- Apple store: $6,050
- Tiffany & Co.: $3,017
- Lululemon Athletica: $1,936
- Coach: $1,871
- Michael Kors: $1,431
- Select Comfort: $1,314
- True Religion: $1,227
- Vera Bradley: $1,186
- Birks & Mayors: $1,082
- Best Buy: $823

Twitter Statistics 2012 by Beevolve: amazing results
As we’re reaching the end of 2012, we’re getting more and more “Year-stats”: social analysis tool Beevolve brings us a complete survey of more than 35 million Twitter accounts and some results are quite amazing.
US Twitter users are 50/50 percent Female/Male whereas in France there’s a male majority.
(all data are based on self-disclosed profiles)
The biggest slice belongs to the 10-20 years old age range and, yes, women tweet more than men!
Regarding the Twitter weapon of choice, iOS app accounts for more than 68% (compared to the Android app), while 32% of users still tweet from their web browsers.
Check Beevolve Twitter Statistics.

Apple’s new Spaceship Campus: some details and some fun
As reported by Wired (and several others) the Apple’s galactic headquarters will house nearly 13,000 astronauts -er, employees by 2015.
This is what it will look like:
And this, according to joyoftech.com, is what’s inside (of course, these are just speculations!):
QR Code Shopping in subway stations in Milan, Italy: klikkapromo.it introduces virtual supermarkets
On January I wrote about South Korea’s Tesco big hit with QR Code shopping concept.
Today I spotted in Milan, Italy, a similar idea where an italian discount-hunting website, klikkapromo.it, is promoting several goods along with QR-Code.
The idea is simple: just point your smartphone aiming at the QR Code selecting the product, get the product into your shopping cart, pay, get at home what you bought.
Advantage is related to delivery, overall costs, quicker selection of several products and more choice to all of us.
Of course, there’s a lot more to it than just point-and-click (logistics, web services, security, discount checking and so on).
The photo I shot (forgive for low light and low quality) shows the panel in a Milan subway station.
Although QR codes are quite small and blurry, they work along any QR-reader and bring the user/client’s smartphone a web page where the discount is explained and, quite useful, the webapp brings you to a list of selected retailers which sport the better discount.
Such retailers are selected on the user’s smartphone geo-location and therefore are the nearest – sort of.
I’m amazed to see this service working in Italy!
