Texting while walking: a viral video and some good lessons from NYT

“Texting While Walking” by Casey Neistat is a humorous cautionary video about the dangers of composing text messages while walking.

Casey Neistat is a New York-based filmmaker and the video is a New York Times opinion-documentary.

While there’s little current data about the number of people injured while texting, more than 1,000 pedestrians visited emergency rooms in 2008 after they were injured while using a cellphone to talk or text. That had doubled each year since 2006, according to a study conducted by Ohio State University.

Dave Cutler: a social media job seeker – and a nice example of self-promotion

social media jobsDave Cutler isn’t just looking for a new job, he’s promoting a social media professional using social media tools.
Current crisis time and economic downturn maybe call for a completely a different

Cutler, 34, of Waltham, sees his efforts not only as a way to stand out, but also increase the odds – as often happens – that a chance meeting can lead to a job.

Cutler started his social media frenzy a year ago after getting laid off as a graphics production manager at a health care research firm in Burlington. Unemployment, he decided, was the right time to pursue a new field.

He enrolled in a weeklong “mini MBA’’ program in social media marketing at Rutgers University in New Jersey, and then immersed himself in Boston’s social media scene – going to networking events, reading articles, attending panels, and watching webinars about the latest developments in the field.

Boston.com reports:

In a job market crowded with talented people, resumes and cover letters just don’t cut it anymore. As almost any recruiter, career coach, and human resources specialist will tell you, effective job searches have become marketing campaigns, and social media, as Cutler shows, provide the tools to promote the product: the job candidate.

Social media can increase the odds of getting noticed in the game of “resume roulette’’ that hiring managers play when sorting through endless job applications, said Art Papas, chief executive of the Boston recruitment software company Bullhorn. Employers, he added, are starting to shift their focus from job sites like Monster and CareerBuilder to sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook.

“If you’re looking for a job, you’ve got to be serious about social media – it’s one of the best ways to cut through the clutter,’’ Pappas said. “Every company we work with, social media is top of their mind.’’

What I really like about Cutler’s way is that he promotes the successes of other social-media job seekers.
He blogged about a copywriter who used Google AdWords to create personalized job pitches to several New York creative directors; when they searched for their own names, the top result was a message from the copywriter.
He spent $6, made five ads, got four interviews, and landed a job.

B2B Facebook marketing best practices – and some real-world tips too!

b2b marketingRichard H. Levey from Chief Marketer wrote a great post about B2B Marketing on Facebook – not B2C, that’s overkill (even though a lot has still to be tested).
B2B and social networks seems talking too little these days, so we may learn a bit from some cool experience.

Chief Marketer recently talked with Zach Welch, vice president of client services at social media news feed consultancy BrandGlue, who shared some best practices for B2B marketers who want to make the most of their “friendships” on Facebook.

Remember that you’re talking to a high-level audience.
One difference between using Facebook to talk to a business, as opposed to a consumer, audience is how status updates are phrased.

Don’t be passive—get people involved.
“You don’t want a passive status update,” says Welch, referring to the site’s main sharing mechanism. “People push out a piece of content saying ‘look at this awesome article we just published.’

Don’t be afraid to have a little fun.
That said, there’s room for quirky content – which Welch calls “community builders” – provided followers respond well to it. In mid-October, marketing automation and demand generation firm Eloqua posted a photo of an employee’s puppy, along with a request for “Thumbs up if you like our newest employee”. That photo generated more than 90 likes on a fan base of what was then 4,000 people.

Post regularly, but pace yourself.
Consistency and pacing of posts on a B2B firm’s Facebook page similarly represents a fine line. “A lot of times in B2B people don’t have faith in social media’s value,” says Welch. “They don’t assign resources to social media, and if they do it is to people who have a lot on their plates. They may do one or two posts a week when they need to be constantly reaching their audience and posting once a day.”

Consider the timing of your posts.
Another difference in the way consumer and B2B marketers use Facebook concerns posts over weekends. For consumer-focused companies, this is a no-brainer: Weekends are when consumers have more time to both comparison shop and make purchases.

Friend or not on Facebook: a parents’ dilemma explained

facebook parentsA research by Lab42 just published, delves deep into one of the worst problem parents are facing these days within their family.

Does a social network – and siblings relationship – mean that all parents are friend with their children?
I guess this will become a major social problem: is there a model for a social family?

Some report results?

92% of all surveyed parents are friend with their children, 72 percent of parents hold the keys to their child’s Facebook account, and 55 percent indicated they were also making sure the networking site isn’t it interfering with homework, chores or family activities.

Most parents check their child’s Facebook on a daily basis — 43 percent — while 31 percent monitor accounts four or five times a week.

Oh, by the way: 24% of parents are the subject of jokes by their beloved kids because of their lack of FB knowledge.
On the other side, 63% of all parents consider themselves Facebook-able, while a mere 5% says it’s still have to learn.
Maybe, it’s due to the fact that 29% of parents can see only a limited part of their children Facebook profile

Facebook in the less social place: a profile-shower-tent

The folks at SpinningHat, a UK design company, just broke the last taboo: bringing a social network in the place where – usually – you’re not keen on being social, the shower.

Their shower tent replicates a Facebook profile and a transparent section in the Profile photo spot so you can put your face in – for real.

Provided you can pay the £14.99 (roughly $23) and you don’t need the newer Timeline (it’s still the older profile layout), get this tent.

(Warning: not suited for Psycho classic movie fans.)

USA house life 2.0: Internet is perceived as a basic utility, a research report says.

us household connected to internetAmericans probably can’t unplug themselves these days from Internet – sort of.
What is Internet like in everyday life in the USA? What has become Internet connection within households – and mobile too?
Here comes a pretty interesting research that outlines how much important has become being connected even in these days of economic downturn and crisis.

Winter seems to have finally remembered that it has somewhere to be this year — here — so it’s time to dig the space heater out of the closet and get your warm on. Or, at least, that’s what you’d expect people to do in light of the arrival of frigid climes but it turns out keeping the heat on might not be as high as it once was on the list of people’s priorities this winter.

Unless, that is, most people would prefer to huddle around their electronic devices to steal the warmth off of their over-worked processors because, given how people are spending their money on household services these days, that may be what they resort to this year.

internet study usa

iYogi, a research initiative that examines the technology issues of today, has conducted a study that found that, among the 1100 people surveyed, 63% of people spend almost 35% more on technology bills than utility bills. For the purposes of this study, the services filed under the “technology bills” category are Internet Service Provider bills, mobile communication services, and multimedia services (cloud storage, subscriptions to Netflix-like services, etc.).

Social Networks More Influential in Emerging Markets – in e-commerce too!

social network emerging countriesA recent report from Pew Research Center: “Global Digital Communication: Texting, Social Networking Popular Worldwide” found evidence that in these large emerging markets, including Mexico and Indonesia, social network penetration ranged from 56% to 86% of internet users.

In some markets, especially those with relatively low overall internet penetration, that put social network usage higher than the US’s 60% of internet users.

social network strong in emerging countriesIn September 2011, eMarketer estimated worldwide social network ad revenues would surpass $8 billion by the end of 2012, with the US accounting for just under half of the total.
Non-US revenues were expected to grow faster, as marketers attempt to increase brand awareness, market share, and profits in fast-growth countries like Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) and beyond.

Social networks growth in these countries is supposed to be a two-figure percentage: Indonesia and Russia, for example, had 86% of internet users spending time on some kind of social network.

Is there an explanation to such a difference between wealthy and emerging nations?

In wealthy nations, users are aiming essentially towards friendship and relationships, since e-commerce is well estabilished and has been in use for quite a long time.

In emerging countries, e-commerce is substantially brand new and there’s still a lot to build about people and brands relationships – as well as about trust.
