Rubik’s cube cracked by a Samsung Galaxy S II – in less than the fastest human

How much does it takes to you solve Rubik’s cube?

I remember I solved it a few times but for sure not in the 5.66 seconds it took to set the previous Rubik’s solving record by an australian guy.

Enter Rubik’s solving 2011-style!

Take a brand-new Samsung Galaxy S II, gorgeous LEGO Mindstorms NXT gear – aptly assembled, some great CubeStormer II software and go!

The Galaxy beats humans by putting all colors on the dreaded cube in a mere 5.352 seconds…
Not fast enough?

Adding insult to injury, human solvers are actually allowed to study the cube before the clock starts. But the CubeStormer II’s time includes the mere moments it needed to look it over.

What really thrills me, is the amazing combination of hardware, the Galaxy, the Mindstorm and its actuators, and the great software that recognizes – via the built-in camera – the cube faces colours and placement and gives hint to the robotic twisters to get a zippy solution!

Simply great!

Friendship Algorithm – from the Big Bang Theory

Really inspired by this old episode of the Big Bang Theory!

Here comes the Dr. Sheldon Cooper’s Friendship Algorithm: do you agree?

big bang theory

More from the Big Bang Theory official Wiki!

Socially awkward Sheldon develops a scientific procedure for making friends. He needs to use an open science grid computer that is in Barry Kripke’s office, but Leonard tells Sheldon that only Barry’s friends can use it … ergo, Sheldon decides he must become friends with him. After repeated rebuffs from Kripke, Sheldon finds a children’s book in the bookstore (where he is hurried out by Leonard who finds him innocently chatting to a little girl in view of a security camera) about how to make friends. He designs a flowchart for accomplishing this task.

iMessage: The new messaging feature allows iOS users to communicate over 3G and Wi-Fi with any iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad running iOS 5. You will be able to send photos and video, receive message delivery and read receipts, and see when others are typing. iMessages are synced to all of your devices, so you can pick up a conversation where you left off. Apple also promises your messages will be encrypted end-to-end for security.

Facebook iPad app: it’s showtime!

Long-time awaited, much-hyped, now it’s the time: the original Facebook app for iPad is available!

The friends at theiFile.com report:

Here we are, shortly after the iPad Skype app, Facebook has finally launched its official iPad app, after (literally) months of speculations and leaks.

Facebook for iPad, now available in the iOS App Store (update: it’s still rolling out), looks much like the version that leaked in July. The app is designed primarily as a consumption experience, which is why the app emphasizes photos. Photos take up the entire screen, and users can pinch to zoom in on them. Navigating through a photo album is done simply by swiping left or right.

Social networks like you’ve never seen before: Amazing Social Visualizations

I’m quite involved into social network, social media and users’ profiling – and social behaviour interpretation – so I always check for content like infographics that sum up all valuable social media data – and don’t mess with useless details.

This time, it’s about social network visualizazion – that is, looking at networks with complex online tools that unveil a new dimension in social networks: artistic attitude and a graphical appeal you won’t deny.

Social networks are dynamic and constantly evolving. While we can easily identify our friends and acquaintances within a network, it’s much harder for us to comprehend how members in a social network are connected and how those connections influence a particular network.

Fortunately, there are now a number of people that have taken the time to create stunning visualizations of various social networks that give us a better understanding of how networks function. We take a look at our ten favourite visualizations of social networks.

Check this post to see 10 amazing social visualization, here are my 3 favourites.

fidgt visualizeFidg’t’ : Visualize

The Fidg’t Visualizer allows you to play around with your network. You interface with the Visualizer through Flickr and LastFM tags, using any tag to create a Magnet. Once a Tag Magnet is created, members of the network will gravitate towards it if they have photos or music with that same Tag.

The image shows the 2 Step Network Environment of Wells Fargo, the second most influential actor in our Network Analysis of California’s Fortune 500 companies. We were interested which director interlock connections make Wells Fargo so powerful and how it is embedded in the greater California/ US industry. Director interlock shows how companies are connected with one another through their board of directors, i.e. Apple and Disney are connected through Steve Jobs. 2 Steps mean that directors on the board of Wells Fargo are connected to all companies displayed in a “friend of a friend” relation. This reveals compelling new insights and business opportunities.

flowergarden social network visualizationflowerGarden

flowerGarden is an web-based software application, produced in Flash, for real-time social network and conversation visualization. It was used at the 3-day Bodies in Play summit in Banff, May 2005, at which the 50 participants were invited to input information about who they spoke to and what they discussed during the duration of the event. The visualization was projected on a large screen in the main summit venue to reflect the current state of the social network and discussion space of the summit.

Many of the visualizations above can be found at the excellent Visual Complexity site.

As an added feature, check this StumbleUpon Top Users and their friends graph.

As simple as it may seem, it shows deep complexity in the relationship graph.

Oracle’s Exalytics Intelligence Machine: move to RAM, challenge SAP, IBM

Ok, this may not sound a brand new idea but Oracle’s Larry Ellison has strongly pushed the concept of its flagship products by packing up three items.

The Exalytics Intelligence Machine Ellison introduced will run Oracle’s Times Ten and Essbase databases, both gained through past acquisitions, in its terabyte of main memory.
The system analyzes business data many times faster than on machines that store information on disk drives, Ellison told customers at the company’s OpenWorld event.

So, in a nutshell, it’s a massive RAM-based DB system relying on Sun assets, namely the latest Sparc processors.

Should this really bother IBM or SAP? I don’t know but it’s another step towards faster solutions in business intelligence – bringing more intelligence in business, that is.
My guess is that RAM-based DBs is more evolutionary than revolutionary than legacy disk-based system, even SSDs.

The Facebook iOS app, Apple and the HP TouchPad: a story of war and peace…

Mashable reports on two really interesting news:
– a supposedly would-be war between Facebook and Apple about the now defunct HP TouchPad and a dedicated Facebook app (that never was),
– the upcoming (and much awaited) Facebook iPad app, that should be unveiled by next Tuesday.

facebook ipad app

Facebook and Apple, united by a common interest in beating Google, will finally put their differences aside to launch the long-overdue Facebook for iPad app Tuesday.

We also expect announcements on a new Facebook for iPhone application, a Facebook HTML5 mobile app platform, and perhaps even Facebook integration in iOS 5.

This all marks a significant leap forward in the sometimes hostile Facebook and Apple relationship. It began well when Apple first set up an Apple Students group on Facebook in 2006 — “a monster success” for both companies, according to a source who spoke with Mashable on the condition of anonymity.

Check here for the Facebook-HP-Apple story and here for the Facebook iOS app.
